THE MIXING WORKSHOP™ – Professional Ear Training and Mixing Training Course

Originally established by Sean Shannon in 2007, The Mixing Workshop is a hands-on audio training course. This proprietary training was originally only available in our commercial recording studio in central Florida. We have expanded training internationally via online courses. Call it vocational training, call it an audio boot camp, this professional program covers audio engineering from ear training right through mixing and mastering.

ONLINE CLASSES ARE NOW AVAILABLE – Now you can train your ears and learn how to record and mix records in either our studio or yours! Pull down the drop-down menu above to sign up for the classes. Classes beginning with ONL are the online courses where you practice in your own studio, and classes beginning with STU are in-studio courses held in our studios in central Florida.

MENTORED TRAINING

Train under the guidance of professional engineers in a hands-on comprehensive program designed to shave years off the amount of time it normally takes to start turning in professional sounding mixes. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why should you choose the Mixing Workshop™?

  1. You need professional ear training and hands-on mentored mixing training,
  2. You don’t have the time or the budget for a college program,
  3. This combined training is not available anywhere else,
  4. Mentored training is the best way to learn audio engineering,
  5. You want to learn from working professionals,
  6. You want to start making great mixes,
  7. You want “time in the seat” plus ear training.

What are your options for learning audio engineering?

  1. Normally, you would have to intern at a studio, and learn the craft slowly over a period of years from watching working engineers
  2. You could go to a college that teaches audio topics and learn in a classroom over a period of years
  3. You could buy studio equipment and train yourself over a period of years by practicing alone
  4. You could learn from tutorials on YouTube one technique at a time, bouncing around from topic to topic over a period of years
  5. Or, enroll in The Mixing Workshop and get experienced mentoring in a short period of time with lifetime use of the training tools

Why was the Mixing Workshop established?

Years ago, the only way to learn audio engineering (and how to mix records) was to hang out at a local commercial recording studio and watch how everything happens, if they would let you. Many times they didn’t because the artist and crew did not want any distractions, and sometimes extra people would just get in the way.

If you had electrical engineering experience, that was a big plus because all of the equipment was analog electronics, and it was important to understand how it all worked, how it was connected, and how to maintain it. And the gear was expensive – tape decks and mixing consoles could be anywhere from $80,000 to half a million dollars each, and that would require a mortgage.

If you were lucky, you could start helping out on the sessions and you’d learn by getting involved and being mentored, and eventually, you might actually get to engineer an actual session. All of this could takes years as you learn a little bit at a time, make lots of coffee, and slowly get yourself some hands on experience. This was called “working your way up”, but you were on your own for ear training, which could only be achieved through practice and learning from your mistakes.

Then schools started offering audio training classes, and eventually large audio schools appeared, and thousands of up and coming engineers could enroll and get some formal training. One downside to this approach is that college takes a few years to complete, and there are lots of diversions. Also, you are usually not working in high pressure client driven sessions, so the classroom is not a realistic environment. You would basically get gear training, but no professional ear training, and some of the schools are prohibitively expensive.

Fast forward to today, where a large portion of records are made on a computer, and much of the process is digital. You no longer need electrical engineering experience to operate software plugins, and you can have a complete studio on the computer in front of you for relatively little money, so you can make music whenever you want. This is liberating and fantastic, with all these modern tools at your disposal, but when you are trying to learn how to use all this stuff to mix a record, it’s frustrating to work in isolation.

You can certainly use YouTube to learn lots of things, and you can find a video on almost any topic, but to cover all you need to know to make your mixes great, you’d have to spend a lot of time watching a lots of videos, jumping from topic to topic, and some of the information is questionable. Connecting the dots can take years.

The Mixing Workshop combines the benefits of modern focused training instruction with yesterday’s mentored training, and adds ear training and mixing practice for a comprehensive course.

This workshop puts you in the engineer’s driver seat and gives you the information you need to know to make great mixes. You mix and train in a working recording studio environment with engineers that are currently making records every day, so you get training on current and vintage equipment.
